Charles Curran Jr. Dundee: Charles Curran Jr., age 89, of Dundee, NY died Saturday March 21, 2015 at Veterans Administration Hospital at Bath, N.Y. Friends are invited to calling hours from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday (Mar. 24) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee, NY; where his funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday (Mar. 25). Entombment with Military Honors will be in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Judes Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or to Father Flannigan's Boys Town 14100 Crawford St. Boys Town, Nebraska 68010. Charlie was born March 26, 1925 in Dundee, NY, the son of the late Charles D. and Catherine Zachman Curran. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Combat Medic in the 102 Infantry Ozark Division. After returning from the service, he cut meat for Adams Market in Dundee before starting his own trucking company hauling for Penn Yan Express. In 1958 he accepted a position with Home Gas where he worked for 23 years retiring from Columbia Gas in 1980. He continued to stay busy by becoming the head of maintenance for the Dundee State Bank, and then Bath National Bank for another 19 years, retiring for good in 1999. Mr. Curran was a very active community member; being a Life Member and Past Chief of the Dundee Fire Dept. having been a member for over 65 years, he was a Life Member of the Dundee VFW Post, Past Commander of the Dundee American Legion, a Past Village of Dundee Trustee, and had been a President of the former Seneca Lake Sportsman's Club. He will also be remembered as an avid collector and tinkerer. He loved building wooden trucks, could fix almost anything, and was rarely seen without one of his half eaten cigars hanging from the corner of his mouth. He is survived by his 4 step sons whom he loved as his own, Thomas "Tug" (Pat Axtell) Carruthers, Bill Carruthers, Ray (Nancy) Carruthers, & Stephen (Pam) Carruthers all of Dundee, NY, a step daughter Lynnette Grant of Prattsburg, NY; several nieces and nephews; and numerous step grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by 3 brothers, Irving, Edward, and Harry; and 2 sisters Hattie Stades, and Myrtle Ovenshire. Online condolences can be sent by visiting www.bairdfuneralhomedundee.com.
