Obituary of Howard G. Covert

Howard G. Covert Himrod: Howard G. "Scruby" Covert, age 81, of Himrod, NY died suddenly on Sunday January 29, 2017 at Geneva General Hospital, in Geneva, N.Y. Friends are invited to calling hours from 2-4 & 5-7 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 2) at the Himrod Fire Department 3530 Himrod Rd., Himrod, NY 14842; where a Fireman Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday (Feb. 3) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee with Pastor Ted Herron officiating. Burial will follow in Grove Mount Cemetery, Himrod, NY In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Himrod First Responders 3530 Himrod Rd., Himrod, NY 14842-9608. Howard was born December 22, 1935 in Town of Milo, NY, the son of the late Howard L. and Lucy (Baxter) Covert. A graduate of Dundee Central School in 1954, he went to work for Libby's where he met his future wife; and on June 4, 1955 in Seneca Number 9 Church in Geneva, NY he married the former Virginia I. MaGee. After a job working for the Town of Milo, he accepted a position driving truck for Penn Yan Express where he worked for 27 1/2 years until his retirement in 1988. Mr. Covert was a dedicated Life Member with over 45 years of service to the Himrod Fire Department, having received numerous awards including the Presidential Award in 1997, and just last week Fireman of the Year. He was also a member of the Teamsters Union, and enjoyed camping and the outdoors. He wrote a column for the Dundee Observer and the Penn Yan Chronicle Express about the current news of Himrod for many years; and was a Past President of Grove Mount Cemetery. Howard is survived by his wife of almost 62 years Virginia "Ginny" Covert at home; a daughter Debra Conley who resides with them; a son Donald (Sherri) Covert of Mondovi, Wisconsin; 2 grandsons Darren (Tessa) Covert of Penn Yan, Andrew Conley of Canandaigua; a granddaughter Courtney (Khristian Perez) Conley of Miami, Florida; and 2 step-grandsons Max and Luke; along with many nieces, nephews and countless friends.
