Dundee: Margarida P. Mendes, age 88, of Dundee formerly of Danbury, Connecticut, passed away on Thursday August 9, 2018 at The Homestead, in Penn Yan, N.Y.
Friends are invited to calling hours from 1-3 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 18) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee; where her funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm with Lay Pastor Lew Ann Giles officiating. Burial will be private in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dundee Fire Company Emergency Squad 12 Union St. Dundee, NY 14837.
Margarida was born February 18, 1930 in Portugal, the daughter of the late Serafin and Maria Luz Pierra. She was forced to work in the potato fields as a young child to help support her family. On April 28, 1957 in Portugal she married Andre Lopes Mendes. Andre moved to the United States in 1961 to establish a new life for his wife and 3 year old son. They were reunited with him in Danbury, CT in April 1963. Margarida worked several different jobs though out her life; with longest time being for American Radionics; and retired from Ullman Devices of Ridgefield, CT in 1995. With their health declining, and the stairs harder to climb, they moved to Dundee, NY in 2012 to live next door to their daughter. Andre passed away 7 short months later on June 28, 2013. Since then, she has enjoyed being close to family and vacationing with her daughter all along the East Coast and Florida. "The Survey Says" she loved coffee, Steve Harvey; Spanish Soap Operas, and sharing her meals with Ruger.
She will be dearly missed by her son Marcel L. (Donna) Mendes of Cocoa; FL, her daughter Cilinia M. (Baird R.) Booth of Dundee; 3 granddaughters Kayla M. Mendes of Fishkill, NY, Corrina M (Dustyn) Thompson of Dundee, Cara Lynne (Tyler Kelly) Booth of Newburgh, NY, numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws; and her favorite "Fur Buddy" Ruger; and several loving caregivers.
Besides her husband she was predeceased by 2 brothers.
