My grandmother, Mary Wands Campbell (Moon), of Athens PA, became friends with Robert O'Neill. One of her letters mentions , "O'Neill's place on far side of Waverly Hill, a farmhouse" She took us up one summer day for a visit. the house was by itself on a dirt road, and O'Neill had done the renovations himself, removing part of the second floor in the living room so that there was a vaulted ceiling. All the walls were painted white to display his art to its best advantage. It was a wonderful place and was very impressed!
Her first mention of him was in January 1963.
This new skirt is going to make me feel like a schoolgirl, + I think, if this Mr. O’Neil has a class in abstract art, I’ll just go to it – wearing something else, of course. Mr. O’Neill had a exhibition in Armstrong’s gallery – not all abstract. Pretty good, much of it. He is said to be a young feller who bought a farm up on Waverly Hill, beyond the Monastery + attempts to make a living painting, which he does nothing else but, and welcome’s callers.
May 1963;
I had such fun at the abstract art class, and especially at the last session, when we were invited out to O’Neill’s place, the far side of Waverly Hill. He located there a small old farmhouse, on a dirt road, all alone among rolling fields and lives there alone with 1 cat, Siamese. This place you must see. You’ll like his production, which are all over the place. He remodels it hisself, took most of the ceiling out of the front room, so that it’s 2 stories high, with a balcony – all in keeping.
In Sept 1964 Moon wrote, "
"Lilly tells me O’Neill is in a poor frame of mind. He’s not succeeding – his portraits are not likenesses + he can only do abstract – she says - + has no other job or source of income."
Judging from his obituary, his did succeed, and lived a very rewarding life! Angela Candela

We would stop and see Mr. O'Neil every summer when camping at the state park and he was always so gracious and thankful to have us visit him.
My daughter delighted him while searching through his old sketches and discussing what inspired them.
We have many of his sketches and paintings and would buy a few every year.
He will be missed and we will remember and honor him every year when we are in town.
God Bless

Dear family and friends of Robert,
I am truly sorry for your loss. Reading his life story there is no doubt he was loved and will missed greatly. To be an artist Robert must have had a way to see the uniqueness and beauty in many things. It reminded me of a wonderful verse in God's word. Revelation 4:11 reminds us "You are worthy, Jehovah our God, to receive the glory and the honor and power, because you created all things, and because of your will they came into existence and were created." I hope during this difficult time you can find comfort through our creator and the wonderful hope that is set before us. - see Revelation 21:4

I have known Corky most of my life. I remember how he took care of his mom, Eileen and kept her apartments up so well for her until her death. She was 95 when she passed. A true pragmatist if there ever was one.
Corky’s works adorn my walls to this day. I live in Charlotte,NC. but two summers ago we stopped in to see Corky and my husband purchased four more of his beautiful pieces.
Corky was a kind and gentle man who gave the world some of the most beautiful works I have ever seen.
I miss you,Corky and wish you great fortune on your journey home.
