Richard C. ''Dick" "Smitty'' Smith Dresden: Richard C. ''Dick" "Smitty'' Smith, age 77, of Dresden, NY died Wednesday November 14, 2012 in the comfort of home surrounded by his loving family. Honoring his wishes there are no prior calling hours. A memorial service with Military Honor's will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 18) at the Johnson - Costello American Legion, Post # 355, 2001 Penn Yan - Himrod Rd. Penn Yan, with Pastor Whendy Wolverton officiating. Inurnment in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee, will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers the family graciously request memorial contributions be made to Keuka Comfort Care Home, P.O. Box, 107, Penn Yan, 14527; Ontario-Yates County Hospice Assoc., 756 Pre-Emption Rd., Geneva, 14456; or to the charity of the donor's choice. Richard was born June 2, 1935 in Rock Stream, NY, the son of the late Charles E. "Al" and Dorothy E. Cornish Smith. He graduated from Dundee Central School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1953-1956 during the Korean Conflict. After being Honorably Discharged he continued his education at SUNY Plattsburg, earning his A.S. Degree in Business in 1958. A life long local resident, Richard started working for Trombley Tire Service after college, until 1975; when he became the owner of "Smitty's" Arco Service in Penn Yan, for 20 years. From 1995-2000 he managed the Geneva Midas Muffler & Brake Shop; not ready to retire yet, "Dick" accepted a position with Kepco and Ron Hinson Enterprises Inc. in Hall where he worked until full retirement. Mr. Smith was a member of Penn Yan American Legion Post # 355, a Life member of the Seneca Lake Duck Hunters Assoc.; and a past member of the Penn Yan Elks B.P.O.E. #1722, the Loyal Order of The Moose Lodge #2030, and the Penn Yan Lions Club. He is loved and will be missed by his devoted companion Sandra "Sandy" Moniot with whom he made his home; 2 daughters Kelly Jo (Bill) Opelt of North Port, FL, and Karen Paige (Bryant Smith) Rogers of Penn Yan; 5 grandchildren Lauren, Cameron, and Logan Opelt, Haley Nicole, and William Rogers III; a brother Roland (Barb) Smith and a sister in law Ida Smith both of Dundee; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Loren C. Smith in 2001. Arrangements were entrusted to the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee.
