I have many fond memories of Dr Ryan.He was my ornithology instructor. I remember 6am bird walks starting on April 1st (It was not an April Fools joke). I also remember his long stride and trying to keep up with him as we looked/listened for birds. I believe it was that stride that helped him survive the war. He once asked why God would rob him of most of his hearing (a result of the war) since he often needed to hear the birds to identify them. Fortunately, he had us students to lend our ears to hear the birds. I also remember a day the class was loaded into the van to go birding and he spotted a fresh grouse roadkill that he scoop up for his lovely wife to prepare for dinner .Dr Ryan’s love of birds was contagious and contributed to my love of ornithology. After graduating from William Smith, I worked at Cornell’s Laboratory of Natural Sounds located in the Ornithology Lab. One day Dr Ryan stopped by with his class to see me...I was honored to show him and the class where I worked. Today, I work in health care but still enjoy bird watching, and I try to live by his motto of having a laugh a day.
It is my hope that these memories provide you with your “ laugh for the day” and give you comfort in knowing that Dr Ryan had such a positive influence on so many students.
With deepest sympathy,
Anne Donnelly Triller ‘83

My condolences to the family, no one can prepare us for the grief we experience when we lose a loved one, at 1 Peter 5:7 we are encouraged to "throw all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you." Even though missed your loved one is not forgotten and God who is the life giver is eager to restore life to those who have fallen asleep in death and promises to do so by means of a ressurection. ( John 5:28,29)

I worked with Richard and Janice to conserve their land. Amazing and wonderful, those are the most fitting words that come to mind.

To the family of Richard Ryan,
Dr. Ryan was a great influence on me and my career in ornithology. His classes at Hobart William Smith steered me into the world of birds and laid the groundwork to my interest in the scientific study of birds. I have many vivid memories of his bird walks, lectures, and visits. Especially, his excitement on seeing certain birds or the migrants at Sodus Bluffs.
I was lucky to reconnect with him years later and thank him for his help in inspiring me into my career in ornithology. When people ask how I got into this work, I mention him as a key mentor. I hope you can take comfort in knowing there are many former students of his that feel similarly to me.. and his lifelong interest in birds as well as his aspiration for excellence in science lives on in all of us. Dr. Laurie Goodrich

We are in shock and deeply saddened hearing the news about Dick passing. From the time we first met Dick and Janice they have been welcoming and kind and really the best neighbors we could have asked for. His passing is going to leave a large hole in our hearts and he will truly be missed.
