To Debbie, Kathy and family
Sharing memories of your dad, my Uncle Bruce, my Dad’s younger brother, and sadly, the last of my parent’s siblings:
At 74 years old, I have a lifetime of memories of Uncle Bruce and my father’s family. I spent this morning with Bruce in spirit… perusing journal entries, writings and photos, of him and times we were together.
My earliest memories are of visits to Grandma Van Dyne’s at the family home in Savannah, and the wonderful family gatherings during our visits there each summer. It’s funny the things that stay in your mind, but I have a vivid memory of a visit my family made to Bruce and Shirley’s new home in Red Creek, and in particular a tour of the Comstock Foods plant where he worked. I was 14 years old and Bruce escorted us like VIP’s through the plant to his “pie filling test kitchen”. I will forever love cherry pie!!
Fast forward 40 years of so. Bruce’s beloved Shirley had her stroke, which only deepened his love and dedication to her. Wendy and I have hosted a Memorial Day Weekend, 3-day camping Picnic, at our home for 35 years running, and Bruce was determined to bring his Shirley for our year 2000 Centennial bash. He was so excited it was infectious. He planned the trip by phone call with me, even sending me a floor-layout of “the Bus,” be bought and specially outfitted with everything Shirley would possibly need to travel in comfort. He was so unconditionally giving of himself for her. They arrived to cheers and applause, and were our special honorary guest couple for the picnic that year. What an adventure! What a memory they shared together.
Wendy and I visited Bruce at the recovery hospital in Geneva during the 2019 Ottman Reunion. It would be the last time I would see him in this life. That feisty old man was making another of his unbelievable recoveries, and all he wanted to talk about was his Girls, Golf, and a good Fish Sandwich the girls were bringing him!
May Christ hold you close in his arms as you bear the loss with faith that he is with our Maker now.
Love,
George and Wendy
PS; I came across a letter I wrote to Bruce and Debbie on the occasion of Shirley’s passing. They were so entwined; the words then truly fit this occasion even now. I share it with you here.

Dear Bruce and Debbie,
I wish I could be there with you. In some kind of wonderful way, I do feel like I have been a part of this five year adventure you three have been living. Even the distance between us didn’t really seem to matter. You were kind enough to include me, and share your thoughts and feelings with me, and I thank you.
God works in mysterious ways. And I believe Shirley was definitely working for God these last five years. Just by living, she ministered to so many, giving them the opportunity of finding Love and Caring within themselves. God does nothing by mistake. Suffering, even as Jesus suffered, is an essential part of our spiritual growth. Shirley was given a gift --- to be God’s servant --- to give those she came in contact with the change to grow in spirit. Shirley’s work here is over now and she is resting with Him.
Your family was blessed; You and Debbie, Shirley and God, working on a special ministry together. You knew it even when you doubted. You knew it because of your Faith and trust in God. And Everyone who came into your presence felt it, even if they didn’t know what the special ness they were feeling meant. And somewhere inside themselves they also knew. Such rich examples of selflessness and caring as you and Debbie lived effects people. That’s God’s plan. The message of Love gets through because of you.
And now your lives are changed forever because of this. It almost doesn’t matter what you choose to do. Serving God is a hard act to follow --- not that you will stop. It’s just that the lives you have been living have been so special the transition you and Debbie are facing will also be a “test” loaded with opportunities for growth and sharing. You have learned so much, I hope that you will be able to share it with those who need to hear what you have learned. But don’t worry, I am sure God has a new plan for you both and I wouldn’t be surprised if Shirley wasn’t helping Him put it all together.
May God Bless You And Keep You In His Light …
Georgie, Wendy, Rachel & Aaron Warner
All in our little Church, Saint James’ Episcopal Church, are praying for you and holding a special little memorial service on Sunday. So even though we aren’t able to be with you this week--- our prayers will be heard.
